From what I've read, this particular blade material, 1060 high carbon steel, is said to strike a good balance between hardness (which is important for keeping the blade sharp) and softness (so the blade is not brittle enough to break when striking a hard object). This is important to note because you don't want to strike a hard object with a brittle blade and have the end of the blade fail and snap back toward your body. I ordered the 1060 steel, but it looks like there's also a 1045 steel option now, which would be more brittle. Less expensive swords made with the wrong materials may not be worth the risk if you're actually using them to cut.
This katana works well as a decorative item for the collector, for sword handling practice, or for practical uses such as dramatically slicing melons in the summer. For a list price of $49.99 at the time of this review, this is obviously not going to be the highest heirloom quality katana, but it sure is fun!
+ He says it's well made and solid, a real katana with a high quality steel blade
+ The blade is sharp (he uses the sword as a piece of art, not a weapon, but sometimes he slices empty cardboard boxes).
+ It has a "cool looking" scabbard and the blade is a gorgeous blue with a nice design.
Bottom Line: Overall a gorgeous piece and a good conversation piece
It feels good in the hand, heavy but moderately well balanced - but I believe this is meant to be a costume piece or decoration and it is very well suited to that.
It does arrive sharpened and it is made of a blade quality steel but I don't know how practical it would be as a weapon or tool. I do not intend to test it in that fashion.
The blade looks just fine. I’m not an expert or anything. It was packaged very securely, and it comes with a wrap, similar to a gun sleeve, to protect the piece as a whole. It’s not the sharpest thing in the world, which wasn’t my priority. I like knives and things, so naturally I had to add a katana to my growing list of things.
It’s a gorgeous sword. The weight, as I’ve never held a sword before, seems fine. It was meant to be a two-handed weapon anyhow. I can’t say much on the quality, as, again, I’m not an expert. Sturdiness as well, I’m unsure. I don’t plan to use it to cut things or to practice any type of swordsmanship. If you want to do that, I recommend a higher dollar sword, preferably from a shop specializing in swords made for active use.
The handle is wrapped well, the saya is gorgeous, and it came relatively quickly. For 60 dollars, that to me is beyond satisfactory. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to own a katana for aesthetic value. I do, however, have a few tips for anyone owning a sword like this, or any, for any purpose.
I did a decent amount of research on care for blades. I know guns need to be oiled ever so often, even if they’re not in use, and that you need to take care not to get them wet, not to touch them with your hands, etc. Most people who own katanas, both collectors and those who are practicing swordsman, seem to favor sewing machine oil for their blades, as it’s not too intense. They recommend applying oil to your blades every six months, more often if you live in a wet/humid area. When carrying the blade in its sheathe, it’s better to carry it with the sharp side up to keep it from rubbing the sheathe and dulling faster over time as you draw it out. Be mindful of this. And again: don’t just put your hands all over the blade! Only if you’re cleaning it or intend to clean it after. It will corrode it so much faster, especially if you have naturally sweaty or oily skin.
That is all. Highly recommend this as a gift to anyone you know who loves knives/swords (and that can be a gift to yourself too :) )
But for the price it’s still not a real samurai sword.
But make no mistake it is real
And I bought it for display
Note: As a Vine Voice, it is my intention to help sellers improve their product while highlighting the features of it. I also try to be as detailed as possible with my feedback so that prospective buyers have a more complete “view” of the product. Most reviews are completed within weeks of receiving the product, so if warranted, I will edit a review after some time has passed.
I’ll end my review with one funny comment my 19 year old son mentioned when he first got his hands on it. His first response was, “This is dope!!!” I’m not up to date on today’s kid’s lingo, but assume that was a huge vote of him loving it. LOL. Anyway, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND this katana!!!
Excellent value!
Well made and very sleek and cool looking.

Does not feel cheap!
I am a martial artist by trade, own and run my own karate school for over 20 years now, so I am fairly familiar with swords. I ordered this simply to use as a display in my Dojo, have several swords already on display throughout the school, and the dragon on the blade attracted my attention.
The sword itself is about average quality, but for the selling price ($59.99 when I ordered) you get a pretty good deal, a lot of katanas can sell for much more. The detail on the blade is not as impressive in person as it is in their stock photos, but again I'm reviewing this based on its selling price at the time, so I'm satisfied with what I received for that price.
You’re going to really like this sword, especially for the price.
To start the designs on the blade are well etched and the blade itself is sturdy and sharp.
Now for the hilt and pommel and tang. These parts aren't the best in quality. The hand guard seems cheap, the wrapping isn't the best and the fake stingray skin has rubbing defects and white spots.
Would I recommend yes, would I display it definitely but if your looking for detail this is not whatbyour looking for.
Also, even though I shouldn't have, I did a test cutting with cardboard, and to my surprise, it cut really well repeatedly (I tested 10 times) At the end of the day it is what it is, but it sure does look beautiful.
this thing is just BEAUTIFUL!
Just as impressive in real life as it is in the photos.
All that's missing is the matching gold dragon silk bag.
thanks for fast service

I Would buy from Makoto again.
At this price you can use it to cut weeds.
Perfect accessory for the zombie apocalypse.
Cons: It's not full tang, possible pegs might come out, and possible rope burn.
Probably gone order another. Thanks
